4 Tips to Consider When Shopping for a Builder

shutterstock_170475806-300x200When it comes to selecting a builder for your property project, it’s important to find someone you trust. But if this is your first home, first renovation project or first investment, how do you know who you can trust and who you can’t?

According to Property Observer, it’s all in the homework.

Shopping around – When shopping around for a builder, fire off as many questions as you need to. Ask for customer testimonials and references, and look at the quality of their work. Some builders will happily show you a previous home they have worked on, while others may be able to talk you through a display home. When inspecting their work, look for attention to detail, quality finishes and a good specification.

Cost – Remember that price is not always an indicator. Don’t presume that the cheapest quote means cut corners, and don’t presume that the highest price means the highest quality craftsmanship. Ask questions about the price and thoroughly inspect your quote inclusions.

See things for what they really are – When looking through a display home, look past the dressings and trimmings and focus on the actual structure. Analyse what’s practical for your budget and don’t get caught up in the expensive elements you may not be able to afford. The same goes when looking at a person’s portfolio. Concentrate on the home, not the view or the pool in the garden.

Ensure they will come to you – Before falling in love with a particular builder, ensure they are happy to travel to your home to work and that they will fit in with your time frame. A good builder books out early, so don’t be surprised if you have to wait a while.
