Ever wondered how a home supplied as a kit really goes together?
Well here is your chance to see for yourself by following the progress
of the construction of our newest display home, with plenty of pictures,
a timeline and commentary from our State Manager Victoria and Tasmania,
Joe Dimech as we help you better understand the whole “Kitome” building

THE INSPIRATION
Having a
small building block of 555 square metres, with a frontage of
15 metres, building the right home that would be appealing was
always going to be a challenge. A major concern on a block of this
size is to ensure that any garage doesn’t dominate the street
appeal of the home. My inspiration for this project was my first home,
a Kitome (pictured here) which to this day is still one of my favourite
addresses. With the garage tucked away at the back the house the feature
is the home itself and not the garage. The new block is actually 2
metres narrower than the one pictured here so the difficulty is going
to be making it work without ruining the homes design and appeal. |
THE DESIGN
I have chosen the very popular Glenbrook
design for this project,
it’s the largest home I can build on this block without using
any of my neighbours land!! Fitting a driveway and double garage
was also tricky, so I needed to make a couple of alterations for
it to work. The home has been reduced in width by 450mm (300mm out
of the main body and 150mm from the verandah and dining). I’ve
also reduced the width of the eaves from 300mm to 150mm to help with
setbacks. Being built in a typical residential estate, I’ve
decided to highlight the home by building on stumps, and finishing
it in weatherboard which is different to the typical style of home
being built on surrounding blocks. So the home fits in with it’s
surroundings we are going to use contemporary paint colours. I think
it’s going to be a real eye catcher.

THE BUILDER As you can imagine I’ve been involved in the construction
of a number of homes, some as an Owner Builder, with me doing all the
work that I could legally, others as a project manager (still as an
owner builder) sub-contracting the individual trades. This time I’ve
decided to contract the whole job to a builder. For this project I
have selected a builder whom I first met when I was building my current
home (yes, another Kitome). David Ritter from A Better Abode was building
the home next door. I paced my building project on the one he was building.
He is a custom builder, experienced in higher end projects. David became
very interested in the Kitome concept and agreed to carry out the work
on this project to get a feel for how it worked. It will be interesting
to hear David’s comments, which I will publish good or bad, in
these regular updates. |
WEEK 1 With a building permit being
issued a week earlier than expected, it was a bit of a mad rush for
David to reschedule trades so work could commence. Due to the size
of the block, the Garage was the first to start, with a slab being
poured on Tuesday (Day 2), and brick work for the boundary walls
and framing starting on Thursday (Day 5). Mega Anchor stumps went
in on Friday (Day 5), with all 61 stumps being installed in one day.
